FLAHERTY 33 Ring Neck Road, Remsenburg, New York (10 am – 4 pm) This garden sits on two acres of land filled with shrubs, trees, and perennials of great variety. It has a formal English garden and specimen trees. A lovely pond is near the back porch. There is a charming bird sanctuary built of stone and bird houses dot the whole garden. Last year the house had a big addition added and the garden around the house was redesigned. From the back deck and pool you can see a fountain in the woodland garden. As you walk the garden, you are greeted with one vignette after another. DIRECTIONS: From New York City, take Long Island Expressway/I-495 East to Exit 70. Turn right onto Route 111 and go about 2 miles. Turn right onto Eastport/Manor Road and go about 1.5 miles. Turn left onto Montauk Highway and continue past village and elementary school on left. HOWARD FINKLESTEIN 3 Kingfisher Cove, Remsenburg, New York (10 am – 4 pm) This is a garden of sun and shade that has been developing and changing over thirty-six years. My main objective has been to keep the garden fresh and interesting twelve months of the year by planting trees, shrubs, and perennials that will provide interest at different times year round. This allows the garden to present a different appearance with each season. We have many specimen trees, rhododendrons, and azaleas. There is a pond and rock garden and paths leading you to different points of interest. DIRECTIONS: From west, take Sunrise Highway to Eastport exit to Montauk Highway/Route 27 through Eastport to Speonk traffic light at Phillips Avenue, about 4 miles. Turn right onto Phillips Avenue to South Country Road and turn left. Turn right again onto Basket Neck Lane to Kingfisher Cove. We are first house on left. Please park on Basket Neck Lane or Kingfisher Cove. TOBY MOLENAAR'S GARDEN 63 Glover Street, Sag Harbor, New York (10 am – 4 pm) Dutch-born Toby Molenaar gardens in the Loire Valley and in Sag Harbor. In three years she has combined Dutch, French, and American zest into a sparkling Zen by the Sea. A freeform swimming pool sparkles against another sparkling band"the cove. The seaside border of the garden is planted with native vegetation"single-petaled pink beach roses, beach plums, and sedge grass against a backdrop screen of phragmites. The swimming pool is about as thoughtfully planned as a pool could be. Gray river stones"a ton and a half of them"were individually laid on the gently sloping berm. Low-lying plants wander and cluster among the stones"junipers, pale pink hardy Japanese anemones, spiky lemon yellow broom, grasses, and lavender. A nineteenth-century ginger pot anchors one end of the pool. Its mate anchors the wooden stairs leading to the dock. Across the expanse of sheep fescue, Ailanthus trees, tall and spare, streak inky shadows across the emerald lawn looking like Japanese calligraphy. From the trees you look back to the house, its angular lines softened by a curved tapestry of green. The light plays across the greenery, capturing tiny shadows and splitting light across matte and glossy leaves, blue-green and lemon-tipped spruce and juniper, a richness of textures and shapes that droop, flop, and bolt upright into a choreography endlessly changed by the wind. DIRECTIONS: Coming from Bridgehampton, follow Main Street past a Getty gas station and Mashashimuet Park. Turn left at Canio's bookstore onto Glover Street. Number 63 is on left at junction of Long Island Avenue. There is a stop sign at driveway. PEACE AND PLENTY _ THE GARDENS OF ROGER AND KAREN STEVENS Remsenburg, New York We live on Moriches Bay in Remsenburg and have beautiful gardens. We have tried to create a series of outdoor rooms. These little vignettes express our personalities and make the gardens come alive. In the back of the property we have created a blue-and-white garden with views of the bay as a backdrop. We also have a property across the street from our house where my husband has made an organic vegetable garden. We have created an herb and cutting garden. A feast for the eyes, this garden is in a park-like setting planted with specimen trees. There is also a field devoted to a "sunflower circle." We have numerous garden sculptures to complete the scene. DIRECTIONS: At the request of its owner, information about visiting this garden is available only through our Open Days Directories and in limited supply at other gardens open on this date THE JOHN P. HUMES JAPANESE STROLL GARDEN Oyster Bay Road and Dogwood Lane Mill Neck, New York Regular Hours: April 22 through October 22, weekends, 11:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Private tours and tea ceremony demonstrations by appointment on Thursday and Friday. The garden suggests a mountain setting beside a sea, where gravel paths represent streams forming pools and cascades, eventually fl owing into the ocean, represented by a pond. DIRECTIONS: From Long Island Expressway/I-495 West, take Exit 41N. Take Route 106 to Route 25A/Northern Bouelvard/West. Turn right at second traffic light onto Wolver Hollow Road.
